It is now October 2022, which means our merrily holiday season is right around the corner. Here at CensLighting, we would like to extend our best wishes to everyone and hope you have a lovely holiday season ahead. To make it celebrative, we’ve prepared a DIY instruction for our popular Feather Lamp for everyone.
The Feather Lamp below was made by my daughter and me in 2017.

To replace the old and ugly ceiling light in our rental apartment with something artsy, we decided to make it into a little DIY project. Although the decorative styles are different, the charm of the feather lamp is that it fits in any environment.

We purchased all of our materials in our local shops. The total cost is around 400 bucks since we wasted some of our feathers here and there.
Here’s what you need:
- 1500 pieces of 4-7 inch goose feather/orstrich feather: You can choose white or any other color you prefer.
- Paper lanterns: You can choose a spherical or flat oval shape. Sizes should be between 15-24 inches in diameter. The lanterns should be larger if you use the feather lamp as your main light. My flat oval lantern diameter is 24 inches for your reference.
- Hanging light Cord: Make sure the light cord screw type matches your bulb.
- LED bulbs: Choose your ideal LED bulb from 3000k to 4000k to your preference. I used it in a more than 30 square meters living room with two 60w 4000k LED lights.
- A hot glue gun
DIY Steps
1. Cut off about 2cm or 0.78 inches at the root of the feather. Note that the inconsistent sizes of the feathers would not affect the overall outcome of the lamp.

2. Attaching feathers: Use your hot glue gun to glue feathers directly onto the paper lantern surface.

Make sure to have partial overlap when gluing feathers. The degree of overlapping determines the dense and elegant feel of the light.

After gluing the first circle, move it down about 0.4 inches or 1 cm to glue the second circle.

The making process is a test of patience. We enjoyed the fun part of it.

However, we know that some of you might think it is too much work. Thus we also have readily available feather lamps for you to use directly. With our DIY techniques, you can also elevate our feather lamps to a unique one that only belongs to you.
