Figuring out how to brighten up a dark room is a common challenge, especially when you’ve just moved into a new home that you’re still getting used to. The most common and obvious reason for having a dark space is not enough natural light being able to enter the room, whether that’s from lack of windows or an outside obstruction.
Fortunately, we’ve got some handy and cost effective tips to help let the light in.
Embrace Lighter Colors
Our first and most obvious tip is to embrace lighter colours within your home decor. If the walls or floors are dark, try a lighter more neutral colour palette to bring them to life. And if that doesn’t work, then go for white. White holds no hue and doesn’t absorb any colour, therefore it will help to bounce light around a room.
Wall Lighting
You would think having one main spotlight in the middle of the room would be the most effective way of bringing light, but it can actually create dark shadows in those nooks and crannies, giving the opposite effect of what you wanted. Try lighting up the walls instead with either carefully placed walls lamps, fairy lights or even try adding some back-lit lighting behind a mirror for example.
Pick the right hue
The next step from picking your light placement is choosing the right colour. White lights can be stark, causing extreme shadows. Whereas a softer, warmer hues have less contrast between the light and dark making the room appear brighter.
Lighten up the flooring all together
If you’re willing to go one step further then lightening the floors all together will immediately brighten up a room. Consider light wood flooring, not only with this help but they’re good at masking scratches or any light damages.
Mirrors & metallics
Scatter light with mirrors and metallic decor. This is another twofer as not only can mirrors brighten a room but they can give it the appearance of looking larger than it actually is. Hint: this method will work best if step one is followed!
